Our Story
PMI Indonesia: Our Story
It all started when a group of Indonesian professionals had just obtained the PMP, in mid-1990. They initially wanted to create events so that they could earn PDUs locally. This lead to a series of networking and gave birth to PMI Indonesia.
Project Management Institute (PMI) is one of the world's largest professional membership associations, with half a million members and credential holders in more than 185 countries. It is a not-for-profit organization that advances the project management profession through globally recognized standards and certifications, collaborative communities, an extensive research program, and professional development opportunities. Since its founding in 1969, it has been at the forefront of working with business to create project management standards and techniques that work.
The establishment of PMI Chapter in Indonesia started when a number of Indonesian professionals passed PMI certifications in the mid of 90s and required earning PDUs locally for maintaining its certifications. After going through a series of gathering, on April 4, 1996, at a meeting which was located in PT. Rekayasa Industri, Jakarta, PMI Indonesia Chapter was officially established and unanimously appointed Hari G. Soeparto, PMP as Chapter President, assisted by six volunteers as temporary board members having two target activities. The first target was to get the recognition of organization from PMI Head Quarter (HQ) and secondly was to hold a board election by the end of 1996. Both targets were completed on time. On October 3, 1996, PMI HQ accepted PMI Indonesia Chapter as an official chapter of PMI HQ in Indonesia and the election was held in the same year having results that the elected board was established consisting of 22 board members.

Since it was established from 1996 until now, PMI Indonesia Chapter has been lead by nine Chapter Presidents elected by the members. The nine Chapter Presidents.
Each period had gone through its challenges and achievements. The Asian monetary crisis in 1997, 2009 and the recent COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. During 2002 - 2012, the Chapter had to change its name to PMI Jakarta, before having it changed back to PMI Indonesia; after a long journey and persistence from our volunteers.
Since then, PMI Indonesia has grown its members to ~1065 people and brought many events such as the Project Management Knowledge Sharing (PRANKS, formerly known as the Open Membership Meeting), where we invite distinguished speakers. Symposium and Exhibition (Symex) is a two-day event that brings speakers from around the world to Indonesia, and creates a networking opportunities for the attendees.
The Chapter now is powered by 40 volunteers and hundreds of PMP volunteer mentors, who graduated from our Study Groups, that have now been run for 20 seasons and helped hundreds of members obtain their PMP certification. We have also expanded our reach to Bandung, Surabaya and Jogjakarta, lead by our Branch Directors.
