Certification Information

PMI offers a comprehensive certification program for project practitioners of all education and skill levels. Currently consisting of five credentials, the program demonstrates both your commitment to the profession and your expertise through certifying education, experience and competency.

Rigorously developed by project managers and globally accredited against International Standards Organization (ISO) standards, PMI certifications ensure that you and your projects excel.

The decision to earn a project management certification is a big one, so make sure you choose one that best fits your current expertise and your future career plans. You can apply for any certification that matches your qualifications, and no certification serves as a prerequisite for another.

  1. Project Management Professional (PMP)®
  2. Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)®
  3. Program Management Professional (PgMP)®
  4. PMI Scheduling Professional (PMI-SP)®
  5. PMI Risk Management Professional (PMI-RMP)®

Below is the overview of two certifications offered by PMI: PMP® and CAPM®

Project Management Professional (PMP)®

If you enjoy the prestige that comes from being the best in your field, then you'll appreciate the professional advantages derived from attaining the PMP. PMP certification is the profession's most globally recognized and respected certification credential. The PMP designation following your name tells current and potential employers that you have a solid foundation of project management knowledge that can be readily applied in the workplace.

To be eligible for the PMP certification, you must first meet specific education and experience requirements and agree to adhere to a code of professional conduct. The final step in becoming a PMP is passing a multiple-choice examination designed to objectively assess and measure your project management knowledge. This computer-based examination is administered globally.

2011 NEW UPDATE: PMI.org - As part of our ongoing effort to keep you informed, this message is a reminder that on 31 August 2011, the updated PMP® examination will be released. The update to the examination is the result of the recently completed Role Delineation Study (RDS), about which we began communicating with you in 2010. In order to prepare for the transition to the new examination, PMI recommends that you utilize the following documents:

  1. PMP Examination Content Outline which contains the blueprint for the updated PMP examination
  2. Crosswalk document which shows you the relationship between the old and new PMP examinations
  3. Frequently asked questions about the RDS and examination update

PMI has issued information to the public regarding the timing of the examination update. PMP candidates that will be taking the examination after 31 August may have questions, which the documents listed above will help to answer. With your help, we are confident that the transition will be smooth and successful.

For general questions about the PMP examination update, please visit the PMP Update page on PMI.org for more information.

Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)®

PMI’s Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® is a valuable entry-level certification for project practitioners. Designed for those with less project experience, the CAPM®demonstrates your understanding of the fundamental knowledge, terminology and processes of effective project management.

To be eligible for the CAPM certification, you must first have both: a secondary diploma (high school or the global equivalent) and at least 1,500 hours experience OR 23 hours of project management education. You have to also agree to adhere to a code of professional conduct. Whether you’re new to project management, changing careers, or already serving as a subject matter expert on project teams, the CAPM can get your career on the right path or take it to the next level.
