The History of PMI Indonesia Chapter

Project Management Institute (PMI) is one of the world's largest professional membership associations, with half a million members and credential holders in more than 185 countries. It is a not-for-profit organization that advances the project management profession through globally recognized standards and certifications, collaborative communities, an extensive research program, and professional development opportunities. Since founding in 1969, it has been at the forefront of working with business to create project management standards and techniques that work.

The establishment of PMI Chapter in Indonesia was started when a number of Indonesian professionals passed PMI certifications in the mid of 90s and required earning PDUs locally for maintaining its certifications. After going through a series of gathering, on April 4, 1996, at a meeting which was located in PT. Rekayasa Industri, Jakarta, PMI Indonesia Chapter was officially established and unanimously appointed Mr. Hari G. Soeparto, PMP as Chapter President, assisted by six volunteers as temporary board members having two target activities. The first target was to get the recognition of organization from PMI Head Quarter (HQ) and secondly was to hold a board election by the end of 1996. The both targets could be completed on time. On October 3, 1996, PMI HQ accepted PMI Indonesia Chapter as an official chapter of PMI HQ in Indonesia and the election was held in the same year having results that the elected board was established consisting of 22 board members.

Since it was established from 1996 until 2014, PMI Indonesia Chapter has been lead by eight Chapter Presidents elected by the members. The eight Chapter Presidents are:

Hari G. Soeparto, PMP
Andy Sugito, PMP
Paul D. Giammalvo, PMP
Rahayu S. Arifin, PMP
Chalid Tamimi, PMP
Adi Prasetyo, PMP
Mohammad Ichsan, PMP
Muhammad Arisman Indrawan, PMP

Each period has different challenges and achievements and some of the challenges experienced include the economic crisis in 1997 that made the activity of PMI Indonesia Chapter declined and a request from PMI HQ in 2002 that PMI Indonesia Chapter should change its name from Indonesia Chapter to Jakarta Chapter due to a policy from PMI HQ.

Thanks to the hard work of the all different boards and PMI Indonesia Chapter members that since August 26, 2012, PMI HQ has approved the chapter to re-use the name of the PMI Indonesia Chapter again and currently PMI Indonesia Chapter has almost 600 members along with three branches in Surabaya, Yogyakarta and Bandung.
